ST. LOUIS CARDINAL SCOUT SIGNS HALIFAX BROTHERS;
HAVE FINE RECORD in BOX
Another brother battery in the big leagues looms probable as a result of the signing of Newton Noblet and Lee Noblet, Halifax baseball stars, by Charles “Pop” Kelchner, scout for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Newton Noblet was signed at the end of the game between Liverpool and Halifax Saturday after the 19-year-old youth struck out twenty-two Liverpool players to bring his total strikeouts to sixty for the last three games played by the Halifax team.
The youth is claimed to have a record of 147 strikeouts in the ten games he pitched this year against independent ball teams, a record as good as that of the sixty strikeouts in three games, which has not been reported previously. According to the terms of his signing, Noblet will go to Daville, Illinois, in the Three A League next year or probably to Waynesboro in the Blue Ridge League before the end of the season.
Lee Noblet, his brother who is a year younger, was signed by Kelchner at the same time. He is known for his throwing arm and has always worked with his brother in games they played. His brother has speed, good curves and a change of pace which his fellow townsmen believe will earn him a regular berth in the “big time.”
The brothers are the only children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Noblet, Halifax. The father is employed at the Capitol here, as storekeeper in the Department of Property and Supplies. Both youths were graduated from the Halifax High School, Newton in 1926 and Lee in 1927.
