A newspaper photograph taken around 1950 of Dr. Kurt Hortner and the volunteers of the Well Baby Clinic of Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
The photo was reprinted in the “Down Memory Lane” feature of the Pine Grove Press Herald, May 23, 1974.
The caption:
If you recognize Dr. Kurt Hortner, and his actions in the snapshot above seem familiar, it’s because he was, ten as now, “doctoring” in Pine Grove. Dr. Hortner gave his services to the “Well Baby Clinic,” the first free clinic in Pine Grove. The registered nurses seen with him also worked without pay. They are: Doris Whetstone, R. N.; Betty [Mease] Williams, R. N.; Lavina Minnich, R. N.; Marguerite [Fessler] Donmoyer, R. N.; and Jacqueline [Zeller] Correll.
The Pine Grove Woman’s Club sponsored the clinic, and their members joined the professional personnel in volunteer work as registrars, clean-up crew and in many other capacities. The clinic was held in the old Boy Scout Building, which was demolished to make way for what is now the newer part of Pine Grove Elementary School.
The snapshot was provided by Mrs. Hilda Gensemer. Mrs. Gensemer, Mrs. Anna Tobias, Mrs. Helen Greenawalt, and Mrs. Mame Frank were among the Women’s Club members who worked regularly at the clinic.
Note: The child is not identified.
