An architect’s drawing of the Sunday School of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Pine Grove, which is to be built to replace the present inadequate building. The new building will be a three-story colonial type structure.
The article accompanying the photo, which appeared in the West Schuylkill Press and Pine Grove Herald, Tremont, May 25, 1951, stated the following about the proposed new building:
A special ground-breaking service to precede the construction of a $103,000 Sunday School building, will take place on Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Pine Grove. The ceremony which will be held on the site of the new building at the rear of the church will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Actual construction of the building will begin on Monday. Schneider and Davis, of Pottsville, are the contractors.
The Sunday School building will be a three-story brick colonial edifice adjoining the present church building.
It will contain a basement for the heating plant, and the first floor will house a nursery, beginners, primary, junior, intermediate departments, classrooms, church parlor, office and kitchenette.
The second floor will contain classrooms, a church kitchen and an auditorium. The third floor will be unfinished.
Designed by William Heyl Thompson of Philadelphia, the plans for the structure were unanimously approved by the congregation at a meeting held on January 14, 1951.
The St. John’s Sunday School was founded in 1836 and is the oldest in Pine Grove. The present enrollment is 248.
