The Porter Tunnel mine disaster occurred on March 1, 1977, near Tower City, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Related photos appeared in editions of the Evening Herald, Pottsville, on subsequent dates.
Somewhere deep within the yawning blackness of Porter Tunnel are nine men trapped Tuesday by an unexpected burst of floodwater which blocked the passageways with tons of debris and possibly inundated workings where the miners were at their jobs. There was still no word on the fate of the men this morning as the rescue workers received no response to their tapping on the walls and and shouting. (UPI)
