Two examples of pro-coal ads appearing in the West Schuylkill Herald, Tower City, August 5, 1949, August 12, 1949. These promotions were meant to encourage local area residents to stock up on coal for the winter because it meant “more work, more pay”. Ads were sponsored by the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company. At this time, coal was losing its monopoly as a heating fuel to oil, which was advertised as cleaner and safer.
“More work, more pay… buy coal today!”
