From the Lykens Standard of July 17, 1931, comes this story about four different State Police raids in the Lykens Valley area, mostly involving illegally manufactured alcoholic beverages.
ARREST FIVE IN FOUR UPPER END RAIDS
Four cases of alleged home brew beer, more than eighteen gallons of alleged moonshine, a five-gallon still and two slot machines were seized, and five men were arrested by the State Police Saturday night in four raids in the northern part of Dauphin County.
Those arrested were: Walter Parmer, 21, and his brother Garvin Parmer, 25, alleged proprietors of the Mountain House, near Halifax; H. B. Chubb, 35, proprietor of a store at Enders; Russell Lentz, 20, and Albert Miller, both of Jackson Township.
They furnished $1000 bail each for hearings held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon before Alderman W. L. Windsor Jr. on charges of the liquor laws. The Parmers are also charged with maintaining gambling devices. The police say they found the home brew and slot machines at the Mountain House. Nothing was found at Chubb’s store, but police say he had previously made a sale of liquor.
At the Lentz home, eighteen gallons of moonshine whiskey were found, and at the Miller home a still and ten gallon keg partially filled with moonshine were seized, according to the raiders.
