Fatally Injured in Railroad Accident
Ralph Barry, 23, of Colonial Park, was fatally injured when he fell beneath the wheels of a moving freight car in the Rutherford Yards of the Reading Railroad, early Saturday morning [15 August 1942].
It was reported that Barry was working as a brakeman and was riding on a car that was being shifted, when the accident occurred. With both of his legs badly mangled, Barry was rushed to the Harrisburg Hospital, where he died about 8:00 o’clock Saturday morning.
Barry was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Barry, and was a native of Lykens Township. He was a member of Salem’s Reformed Church of Elizabethville and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.
He is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Pauline Gelnett, of Millersburg; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Barry; his parents; five brothers, Robert Barry; Albert Barry; Lester Barry; William Barry; and Ray Barry; four sisters, Irene Barry, Mildred Barry, Sara Barry, and Ella Barry, all at home.
Funeral services were held from the home of his parents, Lykens Township at 2:00 o’clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. C. P. Wehr, former pastor of the Lykens Valley Reformed Charge officiated, and interment was made in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elizabethville.
