REBUCK YOUTH ACCIDENTALLY SHOT BY COMPANION, DIES
Harvey E. Kahler, aged 21 years, of Rebuck, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Kahler, Monday evening at 8 o’clock, from the effects of an accidental shooting which occurred Saturday afternoon at about 2 o’clock.
Mr. Kahler, on company with a friend, William Kehres were shooting mark in a field near the store of D. C. Drumheller and had taken a shot at a guinea hen. The fowl apparently had been wounded and Kahler ran toward it. As he darted past Kehres, the latter’s gun was accidentally discharged, the full charge of the shot entering Kahler’s back and he fell to the ground groaning with pain.
The young man was immediately removed to Drumheller’s store and Drs. Krebs and Makick of Herndon, who were in the vicinity at the time were summoned and gave temporary relief, after which he was removed to the home of his father. Examination showed that several gaping holes had been ton in Kahler’ back, some of them as large as a half dollar. The shot carried shreds of the youth’s clothing with it and penetrated the right lung and intestines. The spinal column also was apparently torn and much of the shot lodged in the right side, on a line about an inch above the heart.
The condition of the young man was such that no effort was made to remove the shot or take him to the hospital. He was conscious most of the time after the accident, but he gradually grew weaker until Monday evening when he passed away.
Kahler is survived by his widow, who was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Treon, of Sunbury, an infant son, his parents, grandmother, one brother William Kahler, of Red Cross, and one sister, Mrs. Harry Rebuck, of Rebuck, besides a host of friends and acquaintances, who are deeply grieved to learn of the serious accident causing his untimely death.
Funeral services in charge of his pastor, The Rev. William H. Kline of Urban, will be held from the home of his parents this morning at 9:30 o’clock, after which the funeral cortege will move to Himmel’s Church where further services will be held. Interment in Himmels Church cemetery.
William Kehres, who is about the same age as his deceased companion, who was holding the gun that was discharged, is near nervous collapse as the result of the accident.
