Reuben Walt, born 8 June 1876, at Herndon, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, was the son of Willoughby C. Walt and Amanda Nancy [Sultzbaugh] Walt. The father was a Civil War veteran having served in the 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. The mother was a native of Killinger, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Reuben Edward Walt was accidentally killed in a baseball game in Herndon on 12 June 1906.
As described in one article that appeared in the Lewisburg Journal, 22 June 1906:
Throw to First Kills Runner
Reuben Walt, 30 years old, was playing baseball at Herndon Tuesday, when he made a hit and ran for first base, but the runner reached the bag first and the ball struck Walt on the back of the head, causing concussion of the brain. He dropped to the ground in a senseless condition and died shortly afterward.
The Pennsylvania Death Certificate, available from Ancestry.com, confirms the location and cause of death:
