The black border around this envelope indicates that it contained a notice of death or a notice of sympathy. It was postmarked at 6 a.m. on 25 December 1922, at Tremont, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The recipient was Mr. Rufus Umholtz, Sacramento, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the contents of the envelope are lost.
Rufus Olten Umholtz was born 29 December 1875 in Sacramento, the son of William Henry Umholtz (1844-1929) and Almira [Savage] Umholtz (1850-1914). He lived his whole life in Sacramento and died there on 12 March 1951. It does not appear from a cursory look at his genealogy that anyone in his immediate family died at or around the date of mailing, so the envelope probably contained a notice of death of someone he knew in Tremont, or a thank you card for an expression of sympathy he made for someone he knew there.
