An undated photograph of a brick home found on what was in 1875 the 96 acre farm of Samuel Schoffstall, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
The date of the construction of the home is not accurately known, but it is believed that it was built around 1832 with clay bricks that were made on site. Brick houses were unusual in Lykens Township, but the land owner at the time, John Schoffstall, was fortunate to have a large amount of clay soil on his property and he efficiently made use of it in constructing his farm house.
Originally, this farm was part of a warrant to Henry Metzler in 1784 and called Pine Grove, and was patented to Henry Metzler in 1785. Another part of this farm was part of a smaller tract patented to Adam Wolfe in 1806.
The location of the Schoffstall farm in 1875 was in the northwest corner of Lykens Township, as shown on the map above.
