A photograph taken some time in the 1890s of Seltzer’s Orchestra of Pottsville.
The photo appeared in the “Looking Back” feature of the Pottsville Republican, October 6, 1979, which was presented by Joseph M. Hanney, who was the vice president of the Schuylkill County Historical Society. The photo is from the historical society’s collection. The text was written by Hanney:
While Schuylkill County is justifiably proud of her musical sons sent out over the nation, and indeed, the world, note must surely be taken in the passing parade of musical talent of those many other musical organizations that contributed so much over the years to her culture and entertainment. One amongst a number as time moved by were the dance bands under the leadership of Professor J. George Seltzer of Pottsville, before and long after the turn of the century. Dances were held in Centennial Hall on Centre Street, and at Union Hall, above the Academy of Music on Mahantongo Street. later in his career Professor Seltzer conducted a studio of string instrument instruction in his studio on North Centre Street past east Market; and student string concerts under his baton in the old Patterson School Building, 12th and west Market Streets, were a delight to overflowing audiences in the auditorium for many years after World War I. The picture, taken in the mid 1890s at Union Hall, contains the names of many familiar Pottsville families.
