The photo appeared in the “Looking Back” feature of the Pottsville Republican, December 15, 1979, which was presented by Joseph M. Hanney, who was the vice president of the Schuylkill County Historical Society. The photo is from the historical society’s collection. The text was written by Hanney:
Schuylkill County boasted a number of covered bridges, where the roof and sides protected the hard-use roadway or trestle against the ravages of weather, thus adding longer life to the bridge.
The “Schuylkill Bridge” (above) at Columbia Street, Schuylkill Haven, shown in a 1920 photo, was replaced by a concrete bridge in 1922. It was in this famous, old covered bridge, where, during the days of great shipping over the Schuylkill Canal, the townspeople of Schuylkill Haven trapped many of the Schuylkill rangers and sent them fleeing and scurrying for escape in the waters below. The Schuylkill rangers were a band of river and canal pirates who plundered the ways of the canal.
