A section of a page from the Census of 1810 for Upper Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, showing the household of Adam Bender.
The interpretation of the original page, shown above was provided by Ancestry.com.
It indicates that there were five persons in the household, including Adam Bender. It can be presumed that Adam Bender was the “free white male” 45 years and older, and the “free white female” 45 years and older was probably his wife. In addition there was one “free white male” who was between the ages of 10 and 15. Finally, there were two slaves in the household, gender and age not specified. At the time of the Census of 1810, the slaves were each counted as three-fifths of a person.
Previous to this discovery of the fact that there were two slaves in his household, it was not widely known that Adam Bender was a slave owner. Nor is it known what happened to the two slaves.
In the History of Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 1817-1967, Bender was described as the “fountainhead of a God-fearing freedom-searching, hardy, frugal and pioneering family.” [p. 2]. Adam Bender is considered to be the founder of Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
