The following three stories of moonshine, bootleg liquor, stills, and “high-power beer” are from the Lykens Standard, September 25, 1925:
WEEKEND LIQUOR RAIDS IN UPPER DAUPHIN COUNTY
While making investigation Saturday afternoon on a sugar robbery from the Kulver Store at Speeceville, State Trooper Verbecken ran into another case which was unexpected, and led to the arrest of a moonshine agent. Evidence led Verbecken into the mountains on the sugar theft. While there a car ran into a mountain road, stopped and the driver got out of the car with a bag, went about 50 feet from the bag, and examination of the bag by Verbecken disclosed two one-gallon jugs of moonshine.
The trooper called to the man to halt but he ran from the scene. A chase followed in which Verbecken followed the man for two miles before he was captured. After being placed under arrest the man gave his name as William Mills of Speeceville. He was taken back to his car and brought to Lykens where the whiskey and car were confiscated.
A hearing was held before Squire Sansom that evening and Mills was released under $1,000 bail for the next term of court.
