A photo post card taken about 1905 on the front porch of the William Evitts’ home in Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
Some young neighbors of William Evitts are pictured:
Front Row (seated): Elizabeth Catherine “Lizzie” Riegle; Mabel [Riegle] Evitts.
Back Row (standing): Norman Riegle.
The Riegle family lived at what was known as the Riegle-Dietrich homestead on Specktown Road.
About a year after this photograph was taken, Mabel married Walter Evitts, son of William Evitts. Mabel and Walter moved to Philadelphia where he established himself as a contractor in the western part of the city. In the crash of 1929, because of the inability of his clients to pay for completed work and Walter’s debts to building suppliers, Walter and Mable lost everything and had to re-establish themselves which they did in Lansdowne, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. After that the couple lived modestly while they paid back all that they owed, which they did by the 1940s. At the time Walter retired, he was a landlord owning many large old homes in Lansdowne which he had converted into multi-family residences.
Lizzie was midwife in Specktown. She never married.
Norman went to mortuary school and became an undertaker and furniture dealer in Robesonia. He married Lydia Helt of Lykens.
