A photograph taken between 1870 and 1875 of the north side of Main Street, between St. John Street and Dock Street, Schuylkill Haven, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
The photo, which is from the Schuylkill County Historical Society, was published in the “Looking Back” feature of the Pottsville Republican, April 5, 1980. The text is by Joseph M. Hanney, who was the vice president of the society.
Between 1870 and 1875 this interesting picture was taken of the north side of Main Street, looking eastward from St. John Street to Dock Street. The area has always been filled with business goings-on.
Metamora Hall, later the Bittle and Confehr Building, is shown, with Albert Schwartz‘s frame barber shop pictured on the later site of Stine’s drugstore. Proceeding east – the home and drugstore of Dr. H. N. Coxe, seen standing in the doorway, and the Henry J. Saylor dry goods and grocery store (eastern half of three-story brick building); The Paule Saloon (Eagle Hotel) with pole and sign outside; Pfueger property; Deibert property, later the site of the Lazos building; frame building on site of C. A. Moyer building; Metamora Hall, Erastus Moyer harness shop, home of Charles Christian; open space formerly occupied by Lautenbacher marble yard; three-story brick building formerly owned by Daniel Fisher; corner property later of Sausser Estate. Note the traveling photographer and his gallery on wheels parked aside the Schwartz Barber Shop.
