A 2005 photograph of the Theodore Gratz House in Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The house is located on a corner in the 100 block of West Market Street, south side of the street. It dates to the mid 1830s and was built by the then owners, Solomon Shindel and Elizabeth [Fry] Shindel.
Theodore Gratz, was believed to be a tenant here as early as 1837. He was the son of Simon Gratz, the founder and namesake of the town. When Gratz became a borough in the late 1850s, Theodore Gratz became its first burgess. At the time of the Civil War, Theodore Gratz and his family re-located to Harrisburg.
While Theodore Gratz never owned the house or land, it continues to be known today by his name.
Also seen in the photo, at left, is the old Evangelical Church. At the time the photograph was taken, the Gratz Bank owned the church building and had converted the interior into headquarters office space.
