A colorized newspaper photograph of the 1924 boys’ basketball team of the Tremont Township School, Tremont Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The photo was published in the “Down Memory Lane” feature of the Pine Grove Press-Herald, April 26, 1973, in the hope that a reader would come forth with the names of those pictured. The photo was supplied the newspaper by Mrs. Esther Kocher.
On May 3, 1973, the Press-Herald indicated that it had received several replies:
IDENTIFY PLAYERS ON 1924 TEAM
The members of the Tremont Township School Basketball team pictured last week in Down Memory Lane were identified by two former schoolmates, Allen “Babe” Koch of Tremont and John A. Boe of Syracuse, New York.
Front Row: Robert Bonawitz; Leroy “Wally” DeWalt; Alfred “Kelly” Archer; John “Fat” Wertz; Harry “Hal” Harris; Elmer Dodds. All were from Rausch Creek except DeWalt of Molleystown.
Back Row: Harry “Bandy” Mars, of Lincoln; Paul Hand, of Lincoln; Thomas “Tom” Murphy, of Lorberry; Leroy “Lebo” Boe, of Rausch Creek; Kenneth Romberger, of Keffers.
Walter Heinbach of 323 S. Tulpehocken Street, Pine Grove, knows the last names of the boys in the 1924 Tremont Township Basketball Team photo, published in the April 26 [1973] Press-Herald. He identifies them as follows: First row (seated)… Bonewitz, DeWalt, Archer, Wertz, Dohner and Dodds. Standing in the back row are Mars, Hand, Murphy, Boe and Romberger.
