Four photographs taken some time in the fall of 1946, probably between Halloween and Thanksgiving, of a large pumpkin made into a Jack O’Lantern by Harold Dietrich (1919-1988), who was visiting his parents, William Dietrich (1896-1977) and Helen [Hoffman] Dietrich (1895-1977) at the Riegle-Dietrich homestead, Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Also visiting was the Dietrich’s grandson [yours truly], pictured here with Uncle Harold.
Pumpkins of this size were regularly grown by William Dietrich, who was known throughout the Specktown area for his large garden patch.
No doubt, after scooping out the insides of the pumpkin, Helen [Hoffman] Dietrich made several pumpkin custard pies as well as roasting and salting the seeds.
