A photograph believed to have been taken around 1895 of the “Amatuer” Cornet Band, Wiconisco, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The name of this musical group is painted on the drum. Note: The word “amateur” is derived from the French, so the correct spelling is with “eu,” not “ue.”
The photo appeared in the Lykens Standard on January 29, 1970, in a feature entitled “Scenes of Yesteryear in Lykens Valley.” At the time the photo was in the newspaper, only one individual was identified: the young man holding the cymbals is William Witmer, who was alive and living in Lykens. By the February 5, 1970, edition of the paper, Mrs. Alice [Gordon} Heckert had supplied the names of all the others as identified by her brother, Walter Gordon of Williamstown. Mrs. Hecker’s father was the band leader.
Front Row (seated): Laf Davis; William Witmer; Roy Hoffman; John Schreffler.
Back row (standing): William Hoover; Theodore Gordon, leader; John Stroup; William Long; Mick McCall; Charles Higgens; Hen Gittings; John Good.
