A colorized version of a 1908 newspaper photo of the First Baptist Church, Wiconisco, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
The following article appeared in the Lykens Standard, February 14, 1908, on the dedication of the re-built Baptist facility in Wiconisco:
FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, WICONISCO, PENNSYLVANIA
The First Baptist Church, Wiconisco, was opened February 2nd, 1908, with appropriate services. The pastor, M. H. Jones, at the morning service gave a lucid description of the strange circumstances in the history of the church the last three years – paying the mortgage – total destruction of the church three months later – and the building of the present beautiful edifice. J. C. Nissley, Esq., of Harrisburg, followed in his usual happy mood, his subject being, “What we love proves what we are.”
At the afternoon service revs. Hildt and Guinther of Wiconisco, and Souilliard of Lykens, addressed the meeting, the burden of their talks being the heroic work of the Baptist people in building this beautiful temple, which is an ornament to the town. In the evening the service was opened by Rev. G. W. W. Halliwell of Kane, Pennsylvania, after which Rev. A. F. Anderson, D.D., of Harrisburg, preached an able discourse from the verse in Genesis, “I will bless thee and thou shalt be a blessing.”
Over $200 was raised during the day for the building fund. The sabbath was followed by special services conducted by Evangelist G. W. Halliwell. A number have already accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior. “The Lord has done great things for this church, wherein they are glad.”
The largest donation in this valley was given by Mine Inspector Charles J. Price of this place, $100, and the largest at Wiconisco, outside of the Baptist church, from Mr. L. K. Diefenderfer and Isaac Mossop, $50 each.
