HOTEL PONTIUS – J. H. Pontius Proprietor
One of the oldest and best known public houses in the upper valley, is the Hotel Pontius, which has been popular with the traveling fraternity for more than fifty years. About 1900 the present proprietor, J. H. Pontius, and has conducted the same successfully ever since, but made many improvements in the place from time to time. Today, the house has all the conveniences of a modern hotel, steam heat, hot and cold water, baths, toilets, electric lights, splendidly furnished rooms, and enjoys the reputation of serving excellent meals. Stables are also provided for horses so that accommodations are complete in every particular for the comfort of man and beast. The bar is always well supplied with the best established brands of liquors and cigars, with Lykens Brewing Company’s beer on draught. Though only eight years in the business here, Mr. Pontius may be said to be one of the best known hotel men in the valley, his excellent reputation extending not only from Pottsville to Harrisburg, but to other parts of the State. He is regarded locally as one of the town’s most enterprising, progressive and successful citizens. In connection with the hotel, Mr. Pontius also conducts a large sales stable and deals in horses for all purposes.
