A envelope or cover mailed around 5 November 1869 from Wiconisco Post Office, Wiconisco, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, to Mr. Eugene Snyder, Attorney at Law, No. 10, North Third Street, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
This cover is year-dated by the stamp, known to collectors as Scott #114, which was issued in 1869 as part of a set of ten pictorials. The three-cent denomination used here features a locomotive of the immediate post-Civil War period. While the name of the sender was not originally on the envelope, it appears that it was added to indicate that the sender was a Lucas Kniley or Lucius Kniley. The circular date stamp at lower left was applied at the Wiconisco Post Office. The stamp was canceled with three pen strokes by the postmaster at Wiconisco or his assistant.
