The front cover of the first telephone directory of the Wiconisco Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1936-1937. Beginning in May 1936, the company required that the operator be given the number of the party being called – rather than the name – in order to provide faster service. This necessitated the printing of phone directories.
The “exchanges” covered in the first directory were: Elizabethville, Gratz, Halifax, Lykens, Mandata, Millersburg, Pine Grove, Tower City, Tremont, Trevorton, Valley View, and Williamstown.
