A photograph of William Row (1784-1877) & Barbara [Rudy] Row (1790-1882). According to my genealogical research, William Row and Barbara [Rudy] Row were my 4th great grandparents. Their son, Daniel Row (1813-1871) married Susanna Frantz (1819-1861), and their daughter was Susanna Row (1852-1933), who married William Henry Keiper (1851-1913), who were my 2nd great-grandparents. The Row family interchanged spellings of their surname [Row, Rowe, Rau] as well as its pronunciation, including Row, as in “row the boat” and Rau, as “ou” is pronounced in “ouch.” There were several families in the Lykens Valley with different origins who used this common surname, making it difficult to make the genealogical connections, if there are connections.
There is a high degree of confidence that the photograph is of William and Barbara, because of how it was passed down in my family.
The provenance of this photograph is as follows:
In photo album of their 2-great granddaughter Susan [Dietrich] Schoffstall, courtesy of Susan’s granddaughter. A card with the photo states the following: “This print, made February 1884 by Ross Young of Dover, Delaware, is from a negative he made in 1981 from a snapshot. The snapshot was a gift to Howard Row of Dover, Delaware, from his uncle Martin L. Rowe of Elizabethville, Pennsylvania. The snapshot had been made from a studio photo in possession of a cousin of Martin Rowe.”
Susan [Dietrich] Schoffstall was the sister of my grandfather, William E. Dietrich, of Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County.
