An undated photograph of the interior of the J. C. Thompson General Merchandise Store, 134 East Market Street, Williamstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
According to information provided with this photo:
A popular and signally successfully businessman was J. C. Thompson, who was native of Schuylkill County, but almost a life-long resident of this town. Mr. Thompson grew up with the town, and, like most boys in the mining region, worked in the breaker. He advanced from one stage to another until he became a full-fledged miner.
Around 1888 he launched out in the business arena, opening a store in the Hall Building… with his residence adjoining. Here again he exercised energy and skill in the management of his affairs, as his well-stocked store demonstrated. From a small beginning he carried a line of goods second to none in the town, consisting of dry goods, groceries, wood and willow ware, queensware, and shoes of the finest make.
