An undated photograph of the Mountain House, 201 Spruce Street, Williamstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. None of the individuals in the photo are identified.
The following history of the business was presented in the Williamstown Sesquicentennial Book, 1826-1926:
Since 1873, the Mountain House, located at 201 Spruce Street (corner of Spruce and Tunnel Streets) had been open to the public and was one of the first licensed hotels in Williamstown.
James Darby the owner was the first proprietor who operated the business for many years. For a short time he leased it to James Morris.
Thomas P. Darby, son of the original proprietor, who grew up in the business was familiar with the operation and the task of landlording when it was turned over to him. Thomas first worked in the mines and then enlisted in the Spanish-American War, returning in 1908 to operate the hotel. He served for several years on the Borough Council. He ran a successful business until 1918.
The hotel stood idle for some years until it was purchased in 1921 by Charles Marstellas and Anna Marstellas, who operated it for several years.
It was then purchased by Mike Adams who changed the name to Mike’s Cafe. He operated the business until the time of his death.
The business was purchased in 1965 by Fred Hoffman. He then remodeled the front entrance of the property and in 1970 he sold it to Lea Heberling which is now known as Heb’s Bar.
