A 1902 photograph of men who were employed in the sinking of the No. 2 Shaft of the Susquehanna Coal Company at Williamstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
The photo appeared in the Rotogravure section of the Harrisburg Evening News, March 23, 1940, along with the following caption:
Children and grandchildren of many of the veteran mine workers in this photograph, taken thirty-eight years ago, are still living in the Lykens Valley coal regions. The picture shows a group of the men employed in 1902 in the sinking of what is now known as No. 2 shaft of the Susquehanna Coal Company at Williamstown. The shaft was sunk to a depth of 1665 feet below the earth’s surface and from the bottom of the shaft a slope was dug to an additional depth of 1400 feet. Foreman of the group was William Laurie.
None of the men pictured are identified.
