A photograph that appeared in the West Schuylkill Herald, Tower City, July 19, 1973, pictured three women from Williamstown, Dauphin County, being sworn into the Pennsylvania National Guard. The caption described the “firsts” that this represented:
The nation’s first female identical twins to enlist in the National Guard, Mary Welker and Elizabeth Welker, or is that Elizabeth and Mary, of Williamstown, are sworn into the Pennsylvania Army National Guard by Adjutant General William Gallagher. Far right is Dorothy Bopp, also of Williamstown. The girls will become the Pennsylvania Guard’s first female truck drivers.
