WORLD WAR VETERAN DIED AT VALLEY VIEW [1934]
Joel W. Daniels, age 38 years, 5 months and 9 days, died at his home in Valley View Tuesday morning of complications.
He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Milton Daniels and was born in Lykens Township near Gratz, October 4, 1895.
Mr. Daniel was a World War veteran. He entered the U. S. Army service November 4, 1917 and after training at Camp Meade, Maryland, sailed for France as a private in Company 4, 316th Infantry, of the 79th Division. He was gassed during the Meuse-Argonne engagement September 30, 1918 and was discharged June 9, 1919.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Eva [Bowman] Daniels, four children, all at home, four sisters and two brothers; Stanford Daniels and Mrs. Gertie Kopp of Tremont; Mrs. S. E. Huntzinger and Mrs. R. O. Smeltz, Hegins; Mrs. Herbert Willier, Hershey, and John Daniels, Gratz.
As a miner, Mr. Daniels was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a member of the Valley View American Legion Post and his fraternal associations included the Red Men Order of Spring Glen and the Odd Fellows of Gratz. He was also a member of Simeon’s Reformed Church of that place.
Funeral services will be held from the residence at 9:30 o’clock Saturday morning with further services in Coleman’s Lutheran and Reformed Church in Hubley Township The pastor, Rev. H. J. Nafzinger and Rev. Dr. C. P. Wehr of Elizabethville, pastor of the Lykens Valley Reformed Charge, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Coleman’s Church Cemetery.
