ELIZABETHVILLE – The YWCA of Greater Harrisburg is helping a Dauphin County woman who was the victim of a cross burning.
Ashley Brooks, 29, is a black single mother of two. Brooks says she came home from work last month and her neighbor and her neighbor told her that a 2-foot cross had been set afire on her front lawn. The neighbor put out the flames and stopped it the fire from spreading.
Brooks says she moved to Elizabethville to get away from some of the problems of Harrisburg, but since she moved, her home has been broken into, her car window was shot, and then the cross-burning occurred.
“We had a conversation and she does not feel safe at all, and she is basically living in fear, so we are trying to get some balls rolling so that maybe we can help he find another place to live where she is able to feel safe with her children,” said Tina Nixon, CEO of the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg. “It is very tragic and in this day and age it is unbelievable that things like this happen, but they do and I believe, with our mission eliminating racism, our goal is to help individuals who have been victimized by racial incidents.”
State police are investigating the incident.
